All it takes is ‘understanding’

LOVE may be the foundation of any relationship, but understanding your partner is what truly sustains it. Understanding your partner’s emotions, desires, habits and frustrations may be just as important, if not more critical than love alone.

It takes time and effort to understand your “personal” person and this is one of the most crucial ingredients in a successful relationship. If you do not understand the person you are dealing with, you will always feel that you made the biggest mistake in your life and be disappointed.

It is funny that some couples claim to love one another but you find them saying they are considering to part ways. So one question comes up, “is love enough or is something deeper needed to keep a relationship strong?” In divorce or breakup situations, you will often hear phrases like, “I still love him/her, but we have grown apart,” or “We love each other, but we can’t seem to make it work anymore.” This highlights a crucial point that love without understanding is often insufficient to keep two people together.

The ability to understand and resonate with your partner’s emotions truly is the emotional glue that holds relationships together. Without it, even the most passionate love can feel disconnected. Empathy and understanding are the bridges that allow partners to connect honestly. When you understand your partner’s thoughts and emotions, you validate their experiences and create a space where they feel safe.

This sense of emotional security fosters deeper intimacy, communication and respect.

After years of marriage, you find couples arguing more often over small things and having problem after problem.

Surprisingly, they will indeed be in love, but when you check the real cause of their problems would be not understanding each other.

Couples who engage in active listening and empathetic communication are significantly more likely to report higher relationship satisfaction. This means they will understand each other on an emotional level and tend to be more resilient during tough times and less likely to fall into the trap of constant conflict.

Research has shown that empathy and understanding are the strongest predictors of long-term relationship success, even more than initial romantic passion. Understanding, it seems, is the backbone of lasting love.

Practice active listening and avoid what most people do, as they listen to respond. Instead, try to listen to your partner with the sole purpose of understanding their emotions and perspective. Reflect on what they are saying to show that you are genuinely engaged. Try not to formulate your responses as you are listening to your partner. This only keeps you from deeply digesting what they are saying and hinders true understanding. When your partner feels understood, they will naturally reciprocate with curiosity about what you think and feel and you will have an opening to share your perspective.

Instead of assuming you know how your partner feels, ask questions that allow them to express their inner thoughts and emotions. Do not run to conclude or make assumptions on your own, but always understand by letting them explain on their own.

Empathy means trying to experience the world from their point of view, which can help you respond with more excellent care and understanding.

When discussing problems or conflicts, lead with compassion rather than criticism. “I can understand why you feel that way” can defuse tension and create a more open dialogue. Understanding takes time and effort.

Don’t expect overnight changes. Stay patient and remain committed to the process, knowing each step toward greater understanding strengthens your relationship.

Interestingly, understanding your partner also involves understanding yourself. It’s hard to manage all the stuff that bubbles up and gets in the way of simply listening when you have a ton of feelings.

That’s why it’s important to slow down and spend some time connecting to your own feelings and needs.

To tune into your feelings and needs, pay attention to your bodily sensations.

This helps you identify what’s happening to you internally, so you can then share it with your partner.

Understanding your partner requires patience on your part. This isn’t easy and it takes practice. But it also gives our partners a beautiful gift, the gift of being seen for who they are and what they need.

Understanding your partner may be the most crucial ingredient in a successful relationship. While love is essential, the deep emotional connection created by empathy keeps relationships thriving. Partners learning to understand one another can be the difference between growing apart or growing stronger together. Couples can create a bond that lasts, even through the most challenging times, by focusing on empathy and communication.
