ALL is set for the inaugural Bulawayo Chess Association awards set for Royal Gardens this afternoon. The ceremony will be a get-together for chess enthusiasts and organisers have $5 as entry fee.Players vying for the accolades at today’s ceremony include Castro Sibanda who won last week’s Soweto Chess Tournament, Sizane scholar Nomalungelo Mathe, Knowledge Ndlovu, Russel Dzete, and Kudakwashe Sibanda.
The awards are for the best player for both males and females categories at each club, the most disciplined team, best scholar and best veteran.
In an interview yesterday, Moses Mutipforo said this year was overall a success, as they had great turnouts during the tournaments with at least 100 players at each competition.
“This was a great year for chess, particularly in Bulawayo. The numbers were great, the quality of play was more aggressive and now our challenge is now to attract more women and scholars,” he said.
Mutipforo said that they will stage a mini-tournament before the awards ceremony. The clubs which include Bulawayo Chess Club, National University and Science Technology, Zimbabwe Power Company, Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe School of Mines and Bulawayo Polytechnic will grace the event.
