LOGISTICAL challenges have caused Zifa to indefinitely postpone countrywide area zone elections which were supposed to have been held on Saturday.According to the Zifa communications manager Xolisani Gwesela, “circumstances beyond the football mother body” led to the association to defer the elections.
“The elections were called off due to circumstances beyond the association’s control. We want to guarantee the football community and the nation at large that these elections will be held before the provincial elections set for the weekend of January 17-19,” said Gwesela.
Area zone officials are supposed to cast their votes at the provincial elections.
Chronicle Sport has it on good authority that the cash-strapped Zifa failed to harness resources to hold elections due after receiving few entries for area zone posts.
In Bulawayo, only two candidates submitted their nomination papers for area zone elections. The situation was almost the same countrywide.
It seems the $100 nomination fee pegged for area zones scared away potential candidates. Nomination papers are now out for provincial elections and it costs $50 to pick up the form while aspiring candidates for these elections will have to deposit $1,000.

The football mother body have justified the move saying the fees are meant to discourage chancers from people who want to serve football.
Individuals targeting Zifa board positions will have to fork a whopping $10,000 with Premiership aspirants parting with $5,000 while those vying for the women’s football, beach soccer and five-a-side will pay $2,500.
Those who are interested in going for regional offices are expected to pay $1,500. The main elections will be held on 29 March 2014.
