THE Gwanda Mayor’s annual boxing tournament will be held this Saturday at Phelandaba Stadium with the main objective to fight drug and substance abuse.

This year’s tournament is being held under the theme “Knockout drugs- knockout litter”.
Speaking during a press briefing Gwanda mayor Alderman Thulani Moyo said this year’s tournament seeks to address issues of drug and substance abuse which is mostly affecting the youth while at the same time fighting littering.

“I saw it fit to hold this annual boxing tournament whose main aim is to ensure that young people are occupied and they are trained in boxing. The sport of boxing is yet to be fully explored from primary school level and this is what we want to promote within our town. Through this event we seek to inspire and motivate youngsters in the sport of boxing.

“This year’s tournament seeks to address issues of drug and substance abuse which remain a concern among our youth. We also want to tackle littering which continues to be a health hazard and an eyesore,” he said.

Chairperson of the boxing tournament organising committee Ms Nozi Mabhikwa said the Mayor’s Boxing Tournament will now be held every last Saturday of November. She said the boxing event will also run concurrently with a health expo. Ms Mabhiwa said the tournament will have performances from professional boxers.
