In a statement CHIPAWO manager confirmed urged people to come and witness the talent from different children.
“Today CHIPAWO will be showcasing the children’s talents through arts, by presenting their work focusing on the subject of this day. Hence the organisation would want to take the platform of the celebration of this day, for children to raise an awareness of the importance of one’s mother language,” reads part of the statement. CHIPAWO children and youth are expected to produce a presentation on importance of ‘Local languages for global citizen: spotlight on science’ which is the theme of 2014.
Some of the CHIPAWO centres expected to take part include children from Norton, Chitungwiza, Harare, Domboshava and Bindura.
The declaration of the International Mother Language day was launched on 26 October 1999 by UNESCO at the Paris conference.
February 21 was the date set aside to commemorate the day in the appreciation and recognition of the sacrifice made by the Bangla speaking people in Bangladesh for their mother tongue on 21 February 1952 and this day is celebrated throughout the world. Languages are the best vehicles of mutual understanding and tolerance: respect for all languages is a key factor for ensuring coexistence, without exclusion of societies and all of their members. – CL Reporter
Inter-schools 7s tourney gets sponsorship
SCHOOLS rugby will receive a boost this year after the Zimbabwe Rugby Union secured a sponsor for a new Inter-schools Sevens tournament. ZRU partnered local dairy company Dendairy for the new Dendairy Inter-schools Sevens programme which will be held from March 12 to April 9. Four tournaments will be held simultaneously involving the first teams of each school with 32 schools taking part in the programme.
ZRU did not, however, reveal the total value of the sponsorship package. The ZRU financial reports presented on Sunday show that there has been a 253.14 percent increase in the money spent on sevens rugby from US$4 678 to US$11 842 between 2011 and 2012. An internal audit revealed that the ZRU used US$37 789 in 2013 compared to US$11 842 in 2012. The Zimbabwe developmental structures are mainly based on 15s rugby dominated by major tournaments such as the COTTCO rugby festival. According to the ZRU, they spent US$123 183 on the Sables in 2011 and reduced that figure radically to US$8 545 in 2012 but the figure rose in 2013 to US$86 896. – The Herald
