TOP four Zambian basketball clubs are expected to arrive in Harare next week to play in this year’s edition of the Bob@90 Basketball Tournament.
Tournament director, Tendai Zhakata, said they have extended an invitation to Matero Magic, University of Zambia, Looters and Shells to come and add a foreign flavour at this year’s event.
Zhakata said the Zambians have confirmed their arrival by Friday and will give local giants Cameo and Raiderz a good run.
“I am happy to announce that we have got a response from Matero Magic, University of Zambia and Looters who are sending their men’s teams while Shells will send the women.
“This is the first time we are having international teams in this basketball tournament,” said Zhakata.
Defending champions Cameo, JBC, Cheetahs, Mavericks, Highlanders, Masonries and Unicorn from Gweru are expected to fight for the floating trophy in both the men and the women’s top divisions. “We had big responses from clubs that want to play such that we have made teams like Arcadia Bucs, Drifters, South Central and Real Returners, engage in the warm-up matches before the tournament matches.
“I think we should be using the courts at Hellenics, City Sports and UZ. There will also be a number of secondary schools like Churchill, Prince Edward and Mazoe who should be coming for the same competition,” said Zhakata.
The Bob@90 Basketball Tournament is meant to celebrate the birthday of President Mugabe.
