The Large City Hall in Bulawayo will be the centre of attention on September 4, as South African author Nthebe Molope launches a book honouring the legendary Ndebele monarch, King Mzilikazi.

The launch comes a day before the annual King Mzilikazi commemorations, which will be held at Mhlahlandlela on September 5 and 6.

Titled “King Mzilikazi Ka Matshobane: The Brave Warrior Who Defied Shaka, Defended the Land and Confronted Colonial Forces”, the book offers an in-depth exploration of the life of King Mzilikazi, detailing his military ties with Zulu King Shaka, his migration northwards, and the eventual founding of the Ndebele nation. The book also briefly touches on the reign of his son, King Lobengula.

The event, scheduled to run from 5pm to 9pm, will bring together traditional leaders, historians, authors, and history enthusiasts. Highlights of the evening will include a panel discussion and book review led by local historians, as well as reflections from members of the royal family on the book’s significance.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Molope said the book goes beyond biography, exploring shared challenges and cultural legacies in Southern Africa.

“I believe this book plays a vital role in promoting Zimbabwean culture and history by highlighting the shared experiences and influences that have shaped African people across the continent, particularly in Southern Africa.
“The cultural heritage established by figures like Mzilikazi and later Lobengula is absolutely critical. The book showcases the leadership of that era and how it united diverse cultures, languages, and people into a thriving nation,” said Molope.

Acclaimed historian and scholar Professor Sabelo J Ndlovu-Gatsheni praised the work, describing it as ground-breaking.
“This is a massive work on a great African leader. Molope has done meticulous research and delivered a very comprehensive account of King Mzilikazi kaMatshobane. I have nothing but praise for this work,” said Prof Ndlovu-Gatsheni.
