THE scenic City of Mutare is set to come alive this weekend as the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) hosts a colourful and entertainment-filled Prisons and Correctional Service’s Day celebration at the Mutare Showgrounds tomorrow.
The event, which has become a significant date on the province’s annual calendar, will be marked by an exciting mix of music, cultural displays, parades and exhibitions, all aimed at showcasing the vital work being done by ZPCS, while entertaining and educating the public.
Speaking ahead of the commemorations, ZPCS Manicaland spokesperson, Liberty Mhlanga said this year’s edition promises to be both enlightening and thrilling. The event will start at 8am.
“We are, not only celebrating the work we do in corrections and rehabilitation, but we are also opening our doors to the community so that they understand our mission better.
“It is going to be a carnival atmosphere — family-friendly, informative and packed with entertainment. It is all systems go, and we are excited with the hype and the excitement that has been created prior to the event,” said Mhlanga.
Among the headliners expected to set the stage alight is Jairosi Mutambikwa, a beloved musical figure known across the region for both gospel and secular hits. His songs — “Mutare Iguta Redu” and “Kupinda kwaJesu Mumusha” — have become anthems that resonate deeply with audiences.
In an interview, Mutambikwa expressed excitement about being part of the celebrations.
“Mutare is my home, and to be part of something that uplifts the community and honours the role of the ZPCS is a blessing. I am bringing a full band and a message of unity, hope, and celebration. People should come ready to sing and dance,” he said.
Also taking centre stage will be Lionel Matanda, the man currently setting local stages ablaze with his fresh sound and electrifying performances. Popularly known as Caff, the artiste has quickly become a household name, and is expected to pull a massive crowd.
“We are thrilled to have Caff as part of the line-up. He brings youthful energy and connects with a wide demographic. It is going to be fireworks,” added Mhlanga.
But it is not all about music.
The event will feature drill displays, horse displays, and a performance by the ever-impressive ZPCS Band, whose stirring brass renditions and drum-line rhythms never fail to wow the crowd.
Another highlight will be the rehabilitation exhibitions, where the public can learn more about how the correctional system is transforming lives through skills development, education, and reintegration programmes.

“Rehabilitation is at the heart of our mandate. These exhibitions will allow people to see the real impact of our work beyond the cells — from inmates who are now skilled carpenters and tailors, to those furthering their education behind bars,” said Mhlanga, adding that the carnival atmosphere will also be enhanced by theatre performances, vibrant parades, and speeches by high-profile dignitaries.
The event will be officially graced by Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Misheck Mugadza.
ZPCS spokesperson said the free and family-friendly event is open to all members of the public, schools, civic organisations, and churches.
With the combination of show-stopping performances, eye-catching displays, and inspiring stories of transformation, the 2025 Prisons and Correctional Service’s Day is shaping up to be one of the most memorable events of the year.
Added Mhlanga: “It is a celebration with a purpose, and we are inviting everyone — young and old — to come through, learn more about us, support the rehabilitative journey of those in our care, and most importantly, have fun while doing it.”
