under a programme that will spread to other parts of the country.
The house, which was constructed as part of efforts to provide housing for all which incidentally is Zaha’s theme, was handed over on Saturday to Ambuya Mazvivamba Mambeva (81), who previously slept in a single room with her two sons and three orphaned grandchildren.
Addressing a gathering at the handover ceremony, Zaha director-general Mr Killer Zivhu said the motive was to uplift less privileged families for them to have decent homes.
“We chose this family after noticing the need to support poor families where no one would come forward to assist them,” he said.
“Local businesspeople must be inspired to share their proceeds with underprivileged people. As an organisation, we believe everyone should have shelter and it is important we avail support in an effort to pay tribute to what was availed to us by President Mugabe. I am thankful for the support given by the President towards upcoming entrepreneurs.”
The partnership between Allied Bank and Zaha has seen many families benefiting from residential stands in different parts of the country. Speaking at the same function, Zanu-PF Central Committee member Ms Shuvai Mahofa hailed the indigenisation programme that has benefited local businesspeople. “People should realise that Zanu-PF raised up many people in business and it is important that people choose wisely in the forthcoming harmonised elections,” she said.
“Many joined the liberation war with the interest of empowering indigenous black people who were previously denied opportunities during the colonial era.”
Ms Mahofa said lack of funding for local organisations would give room for foreign non-governmental organisations to pursue their political interests in the name of aid.
“It is time Government provides assistance to local organisations which have the needs of the people at heart,” she said.
“It matters most when our own people who are different from foreign-funded non-governmental organisations avail help to counter foreign-sponsored NGOs whose agenda is meddling in the country’s political affairs.”
Ms Mahofa said she would provide a bed and bed linen to Ambuya Mambeva. Ambuya Mambeva thanked the Zanu-PF provincial leadership for selecting her as one of the beneficiaries of the Zaha programme.
“I am elated that what I have been praying for has turned into reality,” she said. “I had lost hope over what was going to happen in my life and such programmes should continue and benefit more people.”
