Bulawayo is about to witness a fresh cultural movement this Sunday with the debut edition of Alte Jardin at a restaurant in the city. Organised by DJ Sands and her co-founder, MGM, the event aims to go beyond the typical party format, creating a lasting platform for culture, music, and self-expression in the city.
DJ Sands explained that the inspiration came from observing how celebrations are crafted across the continent.
“Alte Jardin is envisioned not just as a one-day music event but as something bigger, a platform for culture, music, and self-expression,” she said.
Launching now is a strategic choice, allowing the team to introduce the concept gradually and let audiences connect with its vision before scaling.

The event’s name carries intentional symbolism. Sands describes “Alte” as “an African term that champions freedom of individual expression through lifestyle, fashion, music, art, and aesthetics,” while “Jardin”, French for garden, represents an immersive space where music and nature blend seamlessly.
“Each venue we choose will reflect the elegance and calm of nature,” Sands said, envisioning a space where creativity blossoms like a garden in full bloom.
Alte Jardin also seeks to diversify Bulawayo’s music scene, which Sands says can often feel repetitive. She aims to showcase fresh talent and unique sounds.
“Just like a garden features flowers of different colours and aromas, our line-ups will offer a spectrum of sounds and energy that’s unique, memorable, and unlike anything the city has experienced before,” she explained.
The debut line-up embodies this variety, featuring DJ Sands, Ubhuti Ontsundu, Spenser M, South African-based Tino Nathan, and UK-based DJ Dzuki.
Beyond music, Alte Jardin emphasises community and social responsibility. The event is partnering with Vulindlela Orphan Care, with a portion of proceeds going to the organisation. Guests are encouraged to bring donations for vulnerable children, fostering a spirit of unity and care.
Sands hopes the event will offer a crafted, intentional atmosphere rather than a chaotic or crowded space. Ultimately, Alte Jardin aims to deliver a vibe defined by freshness and joy.
“It’s for people who want to freely express themselves, connect with the music, and create memories that linger long after the night ends,” Sands said.
