Players in the energy sector say the country should urgently implement plans to invest in alternative power sources.
Electrical engineer and academic Mr Golden Kapungu said there was an abundance of resources in the country that were not being utilised to generate energy.
“There are areas that are not suitable for agriculture, these can be used for solar farming. We also have rivers whose water flows all year and these can be used for mini hydro projects,” he said.
“There is need for Government to adequately invest in the energy sector. We knew all along that our electricity generation would not meet demand come 2010. There is need to move with speed in addressing the electricity shortage.”
The establishment of reliable power sources has been identified as factors to drive the Government’s economic boost under the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset).
Zim-Asset has objectives such as stimulating industrial activity, a target which hinges largely on reliable electricity supply.
