AMAKHOSI Cricket Club 1 head coach, Flemming Nkomo, says he is proud of his team’s fighting spirit as they prepare for a crucial National Premier League (NPL) T20 Blast eliminator against Takashinga Patriots 1.
The Bulawayo-based side clinched fourth place in the round robin stage to book their playoff ticket, thanks largely to a convincing six-wicket win over the same Takashinga 1 outfit they now face again.
Victory this time will send Amakhosi into the second eliminator, where they will meet the loser between Rimuka Cricket Club and Gladiators Cricket Club.
Nkomo said his players are determined but staying grounded, preferring to focus on what’s in front of them rather than looking too far ahead.
“The boys have fought hard to get to the play-offs and we have to play our best cricket.
“We have to bring our A game. It’s a T20 match, so it can go either way, but I believe the team that bats, fields and bowls well will win,” said Nkomo.
“It’s important that everything goes perfectly across all departments.
“The focus remains on taking it one game at a time. We’re trying not to look too far ahead. What matters now is the first game, which is a must-win. The boys are ready for the challenge.”
In their earlier meeting, Amakhosi won the toss, chose to field, and restricted Takashinga to 138 for 9 in 20 overs before chasing down the target in just 15,3 overs to finish on 142 for 4.
Rimuka topped the standings with 10 points from five wins and two losses, edging Gladiators on net run rate. Both Amakhosi 1 and Takashinga 1 finished with eight points from four wins and three losses, also separated by net run rate.
The NPL remains Zimbabwe’s top club cricket competition, with the T20 Blast following the 45-over edition earlier this year, which was won by SOGO Rangers. — @brandon_malvin
