BULAWAYO pugilists will this afternoon trade leather at an amateur tournament set for Manor Hotel. The bout, set to be the last competition of the year, will be used to identify boxers to represent Bulawayo Metropolitan Province at next year’s national competitions.Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association (Baba) are the competition facilitators and they have called upon the sport loving fans to come in their numbers to cheer the pugilists.
Baba vice-chairman, Ezwell Ndlovu told Chronicle Sport yesterday that all was set for the tournament and said they had invited boxers from Gwanda and Masvingo. Boxers from Bulawayo’s 11 clubs Sizinda, Nkulumane, Nketa, Tshaka, Lobengula, Green Mambas, Prison, HQ One Brigade, Young Arts, Bulawayo District and Iminyela will battle it out in different divisions.
Tshaka trainer Philip Striker Ndlovu said his boxers are raring to go and is grooming pugilists who will follow in the footsteps of Meluleki Ngulube who has turned professional.
Ngulube won several medals for Bulawayo at the Zimbabwe National Youth Games.
“We have a number of up-and-coming boxers coming from around Bulawayo and what they need is support from the community.
“We are appealing to boxing lovers to come and watch the future stars who we believe can make our city proud in years to come,” said Striker.
