. . . amid positive response to voter registration

registration is provided for by the new Constitution to allow those who failed to register to do so.

At Haig Park Primary School in Mabelreign — Harare yesterday, people had already formed a long queue as early as 7am.

The majority of the people were registering to vote and inspect the roll, while a few were changing citizenship and acquiring new national identity documents.

Those interviewed were complaining that the process was slow because of the few officers at the centre.

“We appeal to authorities to increase the manpower so that they attend to more people,” a man identified as Tinashe said.

Another man who also declined to be named, said he was impressed by the state of the voters roll.

The Haig Park Primary School centre opened on Tuesday and will close today (Thursday) before the team moves to another area.

The situation was the same at Chinamano Primary School in Epworth, Glen View Six Primary School and Budiriro 5 Primary School as people rushed to beat the deadline.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said 204 000 new voters registered in the opening phase which ran from April 29 to May 19, while 273 319 others registered to vote by Wednesday last weeks under the intensive phase.

ZEC has set up 1 534 registration centres while 1 418 more would be opened during the remaining period.
