adminohannesburg – Disgruntled IFP supporters held ANC members hostage in northern Alexandra in Johannesburg in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to reports.
Gauteng African National Congress spokesperson Nkenke Kekana told The Star newspaper: “ANC party agents were held hostage from 03:00 and their lives were threatened.”
The Star said more than 300 Inkatha Freedom Party members had stormed into the ANC’s offices in Alexandra.
The daily said the IFP declined to comment when contacted.
SABC radio news reported at 14:00 that the ANC members had been released by IFP officials.
The SABC said the IFP claimed its party agents saw ballot boxes in a marked ANC vehicle, which sparked the incident.
Police spokesperson Neville Malila said that there had been no hostage situation, nd that it was an “IEC-related matter”.
The provincial IEC was not immediately available for comment.-SAPA
