Nestled amidst the majestic granite boulders of Masvingo, the Lodge at the Ancient City stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Great Zimbabwe.
This 19-chalet haven is a meticulously crafted replica of the ancient city, seamlessly blending into the surrounding landscape.
Remarkably, the lodge was constructed without a formal building plan.
Instead, the community’s collective vision and expertise guided its creation, resulting in a breath-taking homage to the region’s rich heritage.
As visitors explore the iconic Great Zimbabwe monuments, they are immediately drawn to the lodge’s captivating architecture.
Its expertly crafted stonework, chevron patterns and intricate crocodile details mirror those of the ancient city, transporting guests back in time to experience the opulence of Zimbabwe’s royal legacy.
Ensconced among rounded granite boulders, the chalets offer breath-taking views of the Msasa Valley.
Some rooms even boast private granite formations adjacent to the bed, providing a unique and immersive experience.
The lodge’s pool area, built around massive balancing rocks, creates a serene oasis amidst the rugged landscape.
Beyond its stunning architecture, the Lodge at the Ancient City is renowned for its exceptional hospitality.
One of the builders who was involved in the construction of the Ancient City in 1994 Mr Addmore Mutereke said they built the city using locally sourced materials.
Mr Mutereke said the building was inspired by the Great Zimbabwe ruins.
“We started building this ‘City’ in 1994 putting what we call a double layer, that is, we start with brick and cement then we put granite stones outside without cement.
“We would put the fire on top of huge granite rocks until they heat then pour very cold water so that the rock breaks into pieces.
“We would then use a 14-pound hammer to break the rocks into smaller rocks that we would use to build this place. The amazing part about this whole place is there, it had no plan or architectural design of some sort. We would build randomly as per the owner’s instruction and that is why you would see that there are some rocks and trees inside some of our chalets,” he said.
Mr Mutereke said all the materials used to build and to design the place were locally sourced giving the place a true African feel.
“The grass which was used to thatch this whole place, the clay pots, spears and ancient knives, bows and arrows used to design this place were all bought from the local residents.
“Some of the manpower used to build this place was also from the local communities,” he said. Mr Mutereke said it took them almost two years to complete the Lodge at the Ancient City which has become one of the iconic features of Masvingo after the Great Zimbabwe.
Mr Masunda Chimhamhiwa, the general manager at the lodge said their business is about ensuring good hospitality for guests.
“We strive to make every guest feel like royalty.”
Visitors to Great Zimbabwe are increasingly seeking out the Lodge at the Ancient City as the perfect complement to their monument tour. The lodge’s proximity to the ancient city, combined with its authentic design, creates an immersive experience that brings the region’s rich history to life.
