adminNew Dawn, owners of the mines, have declared the strike by part of its underground workforce illegal.
In a statement, the gold miner said it was dealing with the “illegal and unprotected” work stoppage by a portion of its workforce.
“The company is currently dealing with this work stoppage in accordance with Zimbabwe labour legislation, as well as its own internal policies. Management is attempting to resolve this matter in an orderly and efficient manner, and will report updates to shareholders as necessary.
“The work stoppage to date has had limited impact on production, but if not resolved in the next few days, will begin to have a more significant impact on production.”
New Dawn has five mines in the country and no work stoppage has occurred at its other entities.
Efforts by this paper to get a comment from the Associated Mineworkers Union of Zimbabwe and the Chamber of Mines yesterday to establish whether the industrial action was isolated or industry wide were fruitless.
However, strike action is common at this time of the year as employees try to get meaningful wage increments from their employers.
