THE Anglican Diocese of Harare held their ball games for secondary schools on Friday at St Mary’s Anglican High School in Chitungwiza.

Titled “Anglican Diocese of Harare Inter-schools Ball Games,” the students participated in different disciplines including soccer, netball, basketball, handball, quiz and volleyball.

St Mary Anglican High School also had the privilege of hosting the primary ball games.

Diocesan Education Secretary, Dr Lazarus Nyatsanza, said it is their responsibility to ensure that they nurture every student’s talent.

“It is our tradition to bring our students to showcase their progress in various disciplines.

“The schools are competing in soccer, netball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, quiz and handball.

“The sense of belonging and togetherness of Anglican Schools is one of the aims of having these games. Talent identification is key.

“We have soccer, netball, volleyball and basketball national players who come to scouts for players at such events.

“After this tournament we will proceed to the national games which are preset to take place on June 6.”

Bright Nyabako, the headmaster of St Mary’s Anglican High School, said:

“It makes me feel highly privileged because it showcases talent in all our different schools.

“We are here to identify Indigenous talent, which is one of the tenets of the Heritage-Based Curriculum. So we want to identify talent among all our different private and private schools.

“So, after this event, we are also preparing the national event where St. Mary’s happens to be hosting again.

“We are privileged to host the National Finals, which will cover Anglican Diocese of all schools in Zimbabwe.

“So, we really feel we are playing a big part in education. Our role is to nurture talent, identify talent and it’s not only the academic arena, even the sporting field, and we believe we are playing a fair part,” he said.
