IN a bid to promote their tertiary institution to be located in Mashonaland East, the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe has formed a football team that will be competing in the Mashonaland East Division Two League.
The Anglican team will be under the guidance of Lawrence Nyarumwe, a former Shabanie Mine assistant coach, and Basil Makoni.
The team is expected to kick-start the 2019 season on a high note as they want to quickly get promoted to Division One by 2020 season. Speaking to The Herald the team’s chairman, Jonh Remba, said they will be holding trials to have at least 28 players who will do the job this season.
“We are holding trials and want to get 28 players for now as we look forward to have early preparations before the new season starts.
“The motive is to keep our youths busy with sport and stay away from drugs and alcohol abuse. The team is owned by the church with the sitting bishop as the patron of the club.
“We intend to have 70 percent Anglicans and at least 30 percent who can come from any other congregations. The head of technical team is Nyarumwe, who will be assisted by Basil Makoni, who is a CAF referee.
“Our mission is to play in the top-flight in the next two seasons or so with our immediate task being to make sure that we qualify for Division One,” said Remba.
Remba also explained why they are affiliated to Mashonaland East
“We are affiliated to Mashonaland East mainly because it was envisaged that by now our university will be open and we would use the facilities. As of now we have concluded that we will use Greendale Sports Club as our home ground,” added Remba.
