Annan to visit Moscow, Beijing for crisis talks

after three days of intensive talks with the Syrian authorities “on urgent steps to improve the Annan proposals aimed at stopping the killing, securing humanitarian aid and launching a political process.”
Fawzi said Annan and his team are currently studying the Syrian responses carefully, and negotiations with Damascus continue. 
Annan said yesterday that he has urged the UN Security Council to exhibit unity in their attempts to put an end to the violence and political crisis in Syria.   Annan’s statements came as he addressed the press after briefing the UN Security Council here via videoconference as it met on the Middle East yesterday.   
“I shared with them the consultations I held in the region and the calls I have been making around the world to ensure that there is strong support for the mission and we all agree on one mediation process,” said Annan.
“And I encouraged the Council to speak with one voice as we try to resolve the crisis in Syria.”  
The special envoy said that the council showed “very strong support” for his mission and that council members seemed determined to work together.  
“There have been some differences but that is also normal, and I hope pretty soon you will be hearing one voice from the council,” he said.  
Annan stressed the importance of resolving the situation in Syria not just to the troubled country itself, but to the entire surrounding region.  
“The region is extremely concerned about developments in Syria. Their concern goes beyond Syria itself because the crisis can have a serious impact for the whole region if it is not handled effectively,” he said.
Shortly after Annan briefed the 15-nation Security Council Syria said that Damascus will work hard to make Annan’s mediation mission “successful.”  Bashar Ja’afari, the Syrian permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement shortly after Annan briefed the UNSC in a closed-door meeting on his recent visit to Syria, which has been plunged into the current political crisis a year ago.  
“Mr Kofi Annan assured the members of the Security Council that the Syrian government is engaged with him positively speaking in order to make his mission a successful one,” Ja’afari said. — Xinhua.
