The Veterinary Services Department says it has managed to contain an anthrax outbreak that had hit five provinces since the end of last year threatening livestock, which were also facing starvation due to pasture depletion.
Matabeleland North, Masvingo, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central recorded anthrax outbreaks in December.
In an interview, Veterinary Services Department director Dr Josphat Nyika said: “The situation is now under control. We have successfully managed it through vaccinations and encouraging proper carcass disposal and monitoring irregular meat sales.
“The latest cases were reported in Bikita, Masvingo on January 14, but the outbreaks are considered to be slowly dying out and under control.”
Dr Nyika said districts remained alert as the latest outbreak was still within the incubation period of 20 days.
He said focus was now on vaccinating cattle in traditional outbreak areas, which included Sanyati and Gokwe.
