ARCHERS Darts Club on Saturday honoured their 2013 winning team at a medal presentation ceremony held at Archers Sports Club.
The ceremony saw the players rewarded with medals while others walked away with individual awards.
The club won the 2013 Bulawayo Metropolitan Darts League but were yet to give due recognition to the players for their sterling efforts.
Master of ceremony at the event, Ezra “Tshisa” Sibanda said the team’s captain, Ernest “Maphepha” Sibanda lost his daughter in January in the United Kingdom hence the decision to delay the awards ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Maphepha lauded his players’ skills which he said were likely to see the team retain their status as champions as they topped the table with six games to go in the 2014 league.
“It has not been an easy road but I’m glad we’ve made the necessary changes and recruited the best players in the local league who have managed to stand tall and achieve a lot. In 2011, we got pathetic results and I, together with the club’s patron, Omega Sibanda, made a bold decision to fire all the players then and in 2012 we started with a new team. The new squad did not disappoint us as they came second that season and last year we won the title,” he said.
Players who walked away with individual awards include Tafadzwa Matombo, who walked away with the Most Improved Player accolade, the Players Player of the Year went to Albert Tawanda and Brian Ndlovu was crowned the Player of the Year.
Guest of honour Savanna Tobacco southern region manager Silindilie Nyathi said they were pleased to partner Archers in hosting the awards and took the opportunity to launch her company’s nationwide promotion.
She said the promotion will see people who buy their latest flow-wrap packs that contain two and 10 cigarettes walking away with various prizes that included bags, key holders, lighters, drinking bottles and free cigarettes.
“There’re over 50,000 prizes set to be won by Pacific smokers throughout the country. We’ve redemption centres at various outlets all over the region to ensure those who win have easy access to their prizes. The flow-wrap packs are part of our efforts to bring a clean product to customers and protect them from being sold cigarettes that might have been handled by bare hands as this poses a risk of diseases spreading,” she said.
Acclaimed local dance troupe, Iyasa, entertained guests at the event with their enthralling dance acts.
