THE Institute of Architects of Zimbabwe will early next month hold a conference to broaden awareness on the impact of buildings on environment and natural resources. The conference, to be held under the theme “Sustainable Infrastructure Development”, will be held on September 5 and 6 at the Cresta Lodge in Harare, the institute’s president, Ms Irene Masiyanise, told a Press conference yesterday.
“The built environment and the built profession now need to be sensitive to various issues . . . those of renewable energy sources, focusing on sustainable developments that will make major contribution by reducing the demand of natural resources, cut down on pollution, greenhouses gases and high energy demand,” she said.
Ms Masiyanise said the conference would also provide a platform for networking with relevant stakeholders. Senior Government officials and architects will be among the delegates expected to attend the two day conference. Ms Masiyanise said the IAZ has since embarked of public lectures and road shows at schools to bring awareness to the field of architecture.
The IAZ’s main objectives are to promote the art of architecture and architectural education in the interests of the community and provide full membership status of those registered with the Architects Council of Zimbabwe.
Over the years, the institute has celebrated several achievements. Some of them include the awarding of prizes to some buildings of architecture such as Queen Victoria Library and the National Art Gallery that was designed by the late Peter Oldfield.
