OVER 500 workers at Metallon Corporation’s Arcturus Mine have embarked on industrial action demanding outstanding wages.
The workers are owed wages from April, May and November 2015 as well as January and part of February 2016.
In a statement, Metallon Corporation corporate affairs executive Ambassador Zenzo Nsimbi said the mine was struggling to meet production figures but has been paying its employees in the grades 1 to 10 their salaries monthly.
“Arcturus Mine is currently not achieving production targets and due to the current gold price environment is not profitable.
“In 2015 the mine made a loss of $7 million and has been kept in operation due to interventions from other sources,” said Nsimbi.
He said management and employee representatives were engaged in negotiations to solve the dispute.
“Management has been working tirelessly to find alternative means to give the mine a sustainable future and industrial action is jeopardising these efforts, and negatively impacting production at the mine,” he added.
Metallon Corporation is a gold mining company with producing assets in Zimbabwe and exploration assets in Zimbabwe, Tanzania and DRC.
