Are DeMbare undeserving champs?

DYNAMOS might have claimed their consecutive fourth Castle Lager Premiership title on Sunday, outpacing a determined ZPC Kariba in a tightly contested race, but a section of their fans, with an atypical sense of sobriety, still believe their team was not full value of the historic achievement which came more of a surprise than anything else.

On Sunday, Dynamos were crowned 2014 Premiership champions ahead of ZPC Kariba thanks to the Harare giants’ 2-0 win over How Mine and a surprise 3-2 CAPS United triumph over ZPC Kariba on the final round of league matches on Sunday.

Just like last year, the football gods once again smiled on Dynamos on the last day when city rivals CAPS United fashioned a sensational victory over ZPC Kariba.
CAPS United fans even turned up against their team for putting a brilliant show, especially their goalkeeper Tafadzwa Dube, as they could not stand the bragging from their Dynamos counterparts.

Last year, CAPS United also came to Dynamos’ aid when they held Harare City to a 2-2 draw as the champions beat Black Mambas to win on a superior goal difference.
Accordingly, Pasuwa made history on Sunday by becoming the first coach in the modern day Premiership to win four successive titles.

Be that as it may, many would feel for ZPC coach Saul Chaminuka and his men, who had done almost everything to win this title, only to falter on the final day of the season when the stage had been set for the league title to find its way to the resort area of Kariba, for the first time in domestic football history.

Neutrals and even level-headed Dynamos supporters concur that ZPC deserved the coveted accolade, given their determined Cinderella show throughout the season, which included a remarkable conquest of the Glamour Boys that saw the top flight league debutants beat the Harare giants home and away in league assignments.

Thus Mutare staunch Dynamos supporter Ngoni Ndoro conceded that his team won the fourth consecutive title, but the performance was not pleasing at all.
“We know that a win is a win, but this was far from being impressive. We could have done better. Yes, we will thank CAPS United players for their professionalism, but we still feel that we should have done it for ourselves,” said Ndoro.

Another Dynamos supporter, Taurai Muzanenhamo of Sakubva, also agreed that the Glamour Boys won the championship, but ZPC Kariba were the better side of the season.

“I am a Dynamos supporter, but I think real friends of the game of football will appreciate that ZPC Kariba deserved the title.
“ZPC played well and we lost a number of games that we should not have. In fact, our team was not as intact as we know it.

“However, we will always celebrate winning championship because we know it is our team,” he said.
Memory Masundire of Chikanga said her team, Dynamos, only made the mistake of losing to ZPC Kariba, but otherwise they had a good season.

“We only made the mistake of losing those two league matches to ZPC Kariba otherwise we had a good season. I believe that we still deserved to be crowned champions. Yes, ZPC gave us a good run for our money but at the end of the day we are the Zimbabwean champions and everyone knows that,” she said.

As they always say, it could be the mark of true champions that even if they do not play well they still find themselves donning winners’ medals!
