Are we developing ball boys or players?

They are the future players for the national teams.

It hurts me so much to find young boys/ girls playing barefooted in this day and age.

You will find companies focusing only on senior teams neglecting juniors.

I believe when companies opt to sponsor a club, there must be a certain percentage allocated to juniors of that senior team.

In the past there used to be four to five junior trophies played and the winners of regions would meet in Harare to play for the Champion of champions final.

We need to go back to such kinds of tournaments, for example the Peter Ndlovu Tournament.

That  is where talent was scouted from, Amon Chimbalanga, Mamba Chisoni, Joseph Kabwe, Taurai Makukutu were identified from that tournament and they would say afterwards, “Umdala lumuntu, akutshele isikolo owafunda kiso le-grade yakho.”

It is because they had met many players at junior level in junior and school tournaments and later on while in the Premiership, they could still recognise the faces they can across at such junior and school tournaments.

It is wrong not to have juniors curtain raising inside the stadium.

You will find juniors playing outside Barbourfields grounds while the senior team is playing inside at 3pm.

When the first team is fixtured, so should the juniors curtain raise.

During my days I would watch the senior team play and and I would ask Adam Ndlovu and Nkululeko Dlodlo for bandages or shin guards, and that was a big motivator on its own.

There was no big gap between senior and junior players.

Now you will find there is no senior player who knows a player in the junior ranks and not to talk about giving a short or socks to young players.

Let’s not take them from the outside ground to the main stadium to use them as ball boys. Are we developing ball boys?

Finally, well done to the senior team and Under-23 for the job done. Until next week stay blessed.
