AT just nine years old, Aria Chigumba is proving that talent has no age or gender after overcoming the odds to secure a leading role in the short film “Chimu naRanga” and winning the Outstanding Actor award.

The Avis Junior Academy learner from Marimba, Harare, has emerged as one of Zimbabwe’s promising young actresses following her award-winning performance in the Jonathan Samkange production, which premièred on June 27 at Joina City.

What began as a bold leap of faith has now become an inspiring success story.

According to Aria’s mother, the production team had announced auditions specifically for boys aged between 10 and 12 years. Aria, however, was only nine and did not fit the casting requirements. Confident in her daughter’s ability, her mother decided they had nothing to lose by trying.

“When the auditions were announced, they were looking for boys aged between 10 and 12 years. Aria was only nine and she is a girl, but we believed in her talent and took the chance. She was cast as the lead character, Chimu, and went on to win the Outstanding Actor award,” she said.

The achievement has become a testament to the importance of giving children opportunities, regardless of conventional expectations. Reflecting on her journey, Aria said acting has always been part of her personality.

“I was born with a crazy mind. I just loved acting and I thank my mom for introducing me to Spotlight,” she said.

Although receiving the Outstanding Actor award was a memorable milestone, the young actress said her biggest dream is not celebrity status but inspiring other children to pursue their passions.

“I don’t wish for fame in the future, but I want to be an inspiration to other kids out there that they should go for what they feel they are good at,” she said.

Aria’s performance in “Chimu naRanga” won praise from audiences during the première, with many applauding the confidence and emotion she brought to the lead role despite her young age.

Her mother described the award as a proud moment for the entire family and said it reaffirmed the importance of believing in children’s dreams.

“I am grateful for the recognition of my daughter. I am proud of her,” she said.

She also encouraged parents to look beyond academic performance and invest in developing their children’s natural gifts.

“Many parents don’t really care for children’s talent; rather, they force them to only study,” she said.

“I want to tell them to let their children show their talents because you can never know where that talent will lead them.”

She said Aria’s success would never have happened if they had focused only on the age and gender requirements listed in the audition notice.

Instead, they chose to trust her talent, a decision that ultimately opened doors to an opportunity that has launched the youngster into the spotlight.

As Zimbabwe’s film industry continues to create platforms for emerging actors, Aria’s story serves as a powerful reminder that ability often speaks louder than expectations.

Now balancing schoolwork with a growing acting career, the young performer hopes to keep improving her craft while encouraging other children to believe in themselves.

From auditioning for a role that was seemingly out of reach to taking centre stage as Chimu and walking away with the Outstanding Actor award, Aria Chigumba has shown that courage, determination and the support of family can turn unlikely dreams into remarkable achievements.
