Arifonso’s last bout ended in humiliation in September 2006 when he was floored in the first round by Mbwana Matumla in an elimination bout in Tanzania. The Mbare-born boxer then turned his hand to training and promoting but he is expecting to trade leather with his long-time pal Spencer Matsangura in a testimonial match at Barca Sports Bar in Mbare on Africa Day.
“I have retired from boxing but I feel that I should stage one more fight, especially here in Mbare, where I was been born and bred,” said Arifonso. There are a lot of people who never saw me in action and I just want to show them how we used to fight.
“This will be my testimonial match and it’s going to be over six rounds.”
The bantamweight bout should be the main match on the Mosquito Testimonial Bill where at least four other supporting acts have been lined-up.
During my days as a boxer, I was a flyweight but now I have grown bigger and that’s why I have moved to bantamweight for this testimonial. I hope that my return to the ring will inspire a lot of people and also help to raise the profile of boxing with the new board,” said Arifonso.
