TWO iron-bar-wielding robbers who ambushed four Cowdray Park residents and fractured their legs before robbing them of cash, cellphones, and a driver’s license, appeared in court.

Tapiwa Mutonhori and Stanley Mleya appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Sibongile Msipa-Marondedze facing four counts of armed robbery.

They were self-actors and they pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Mutonhori was remanded in custody while Mleya was remanded out of custody after he paid US$100 bail. They are both expected to be back in court on 19 February.

Allegations against Mutonhori and Muleya are that on 15 September last year at Cowdray Park suburb they ambushed Simbarashe Moyo and pepper sprayed him on the face before attacking him on the leg with an iron bar. Moyo, the court heard, fractured his leg.

They frisked him and took US$50 and a cellphone.

The court heard that on 28 September the pair lay in wait at a bushy area in Cowdray Park suburb and when Welcome Maseko passed by they attacked him several times on the legs, fracturing one of his legs. They reportedly searched him and took US$20 and two cellphones.

On the same day after attacking Maseko they ambushed Mhlolisi Ndlovu who was walking along a footpath and severely attacked him several times on the left leg and it fractured. After that they allegedly searched him and took US$47 and a driver’s license.

On 28 September again they laid in wait in a bushy area and attacked Mduduzi Nyoni on the leg with an iron bar. They searched him and took US$63 before they fled.
