Armed gang on the prowl

The robbers are targeting cash and cellphones and have already hit four times since stealing the taxi which belongs to Ayoba Taxis. The Toyota Ram, registration number ABQ 9184, was stolen on Wednesday night by three men who hired it at 10 pm to ferry them from the city to Warren Park.
Harare Police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau, yesterday said: “Members of the public are being warned to be on the look out for the taxi. We are also warning taxi drivers to scrutinise people who hire them, especially during late hours so that they don’t fall prey.”
Insp Sabau said along the way to Warren Park, the trio produced knives and robbed the driver of the taxi, US$83 and a cell phone before dumping him along Lytton Road near Rugare.
At 2:50 am (yesterday), two security guards who were manning Toll Quip Company in Southerton industrial area were approached by four people with a blue taxi and one of them had an axe. One of the security guards was struck with the axe and the robbers took away a cell phone, two pairs of shoes and US$10.
At 3 am, security guards who were at Metropolitan Bank in Southerton were approached by the same gang and robbed of a cellphone and US$11.
Thirty minutes later, the gang went to Pattif Shopping Centre in Southerton and entered a bar with four axes. One of the accused struck one of the bar attendants who was behind the counter before disappearing with a cash box with US$1 000 and two cell phones. – CR.
