TWO armed robbers allegedly raided an Agribank branch at Chivi Growth Point in Masvingo and got away with $83 000 cash.
They locked workers in a strong room before getting away with the cash. Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Thursday morning last week.
He said the suspects were still at large and police have since launched a manhunt. “I can confirm that there is a robbery incident which happened at Chivi Growth Point but we don’t have the full details yet. No arrests have been made so far but police investigations are in progress,” he said.
However, sources said the robbers got away with $80 000 and R30 000 when they raided the bank at around 4am.
They said when police officers arrived at the scene, they found the bank manager and counter clerk locked in the strong room.
The sources said two robbers arrived at the home of the bank manager, Mr Farai Jochore.
The two, who were armed with a pistol tied Mr Jochore’s wife before force-marching him to the bank but failed to access the safe as he did not have the keys.
The robbers then proceeded to the house of bank clerk, Mr Fidelis Bhachi, where they tied his wife and other relatives at the house and forced him and Mr Jochore back to the bank.
Mr Bhachi, who had the keys, was forced to open the strong room and the robbers gained access to the safe which they broke before getting away with the money.
