TOP visual artist, Tafadzwa Gwetai last week became one of the few Zimbabweans to stage an exhibition at Art Eye Gallery in South Africa.
Gwetai’s latest offering “Counting People” is going to be mounted at Art Eye Gallery for the next two weeks. Art Eye Gallery is a new vibrant, dynamic investment art and contemporary art space, which celebrates African artworks and sensibilities.
Chronicle caught up with Gwetai just before the opening night. He said, “Counting People” explores the human condition and how mankind has redefined itself and its basic existence.
“This is my first solo exhibition outside the country. All my pieces are an exploration of how humans have managed to adapt in the ever-changing environment.
“The premise of my works is purely on finger printing the tale of what we know to be humanity.”
South African art lovers are set for the mind engaging art Gwetai has been known for locally. He would employ his traditional number system that uses mathematics as a form of design.
“In all my pieces there is a common denominator of numbers. I have reintroduced and redefined mathematics with science. The logic is to create a new language, which informs the body of my work,” Gwetai said.
The National Art Gallery in Bulawayo resident visual artist, painter, sculptor and emerging curator also uses mediums such as oil paint, mixed medium and found objects.
