POLICE in Gweru are investigating an armed robbery in which three men pounced on Somabhula Primary School on the outskirts of Gweru where they got away with cellphones and cash with a combined value of $270. Police spokesperson for Midlands Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the incident occurred on Monday at about 1.30pm when the three robbers found the headmistress, Mrs Marylin Mangena and two teachers at the school’s reception.
“On Monday at about 1.30 pm, Mrs Marylin Mangena who is the headmistress of Somabhula was at the school reception when three men who were driving in a taxi inscribed “Vanopa” approached her and pretended to be looking for places for their children,” said Insp Mahoko.
“Mrs Mangena then told the three that the school had no vacancies for new pupils and they drove away.”
He said the three then returned to the school a few minutes later but this time on foot.
“They found two teachers, Mr Matova Tatenda and Mr Fortune Ruvengo at the reception and demanded cash. The three who were armed with a pistol then searched the two teachers and the headmistress and got away with cash and three cellphones all valued at $270. They also went on to assault the teachers with sticks and booted feet before they went away,” said Insp Mahoko.
He said the police have since launched a manhunt for the trio.
“We appeal to members of the public with information that might lead to the arrest of the three suspects to approach any nearest police station. They can also make use of our suggestion boxes,” said Insp Mahoko.
