OUTGOING Home Affairs Minister Cde Kembo Mohadi yesterday made a brief stopover at the site where the statue of the late Vice President Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo will be erected. Cde Mohadi was briefed by contractors on the progress made in the re-construction of the pedestal on which the statue would be mounted.
According to one of the major contractors, Mr John Matsunge of Joab Construction and Engineering Services, the project would be completed on 18 October.
“We are moving at a very fast speed so that we are able to beat the deadline. Most of the work has been completed and what is now left is to do cladding before putting terrazzo,” he said.
Mr Matsunge said Cde Mohadi was impressed with the rate and at which work was progressing.
“Minister Mohadi expressed satisfaction with progress made so far. We are working with various partners including the Department of Roads who are also working on constructing the road,” he said.
Mr Matsunge said the intersection of 8th Avenue and Main Street on which Dr Nkomo’s statue would be erected would be turned into a round-about.
Cde Mohadi said the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe, which falls under his ministry was allocated a substantial amount to complete the project.
The statue is presently kept at the Bulawayo History Museum.
The Government through NMMZ is working with the Bulawayo City Council to erect Dr Nkomo’s statue in honour of late nationalist who contributed immensely to the country’s liberation struggle and also contributed to the development of the country after independence.
