A FOREIGN national, believed to be from Rwanda, was shot and killed by a gang of robbers at his home in Mainway Meadows, Waterfalls, on Friday night.
Police suspect the victim, aged 49, who is yet to be named, was targeted after being followed from his shop in Harare’s Central Business District (CBD).
He was attacked moments after arriving at his place of residence.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the attack.
“The victim is believed to have been attacked by four suspects, who are said to have tracked him from a grocery shop located along Jason Moyo Street in Harare.
“We are yet to identify the victim as we are still to ascertain his nationality.
“As police, we follow international protocols when dealing with such matters,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
He said the name of the victim will be publicised once investigations are complete.
“We have to confirm with the relevant embassies to confirm the identity of the victim. Failure to do so violates international protocols.”
A police source close to the investigation said: “Indications are that the assailants suspected that the foreigner was in possession of money.”
They then tracked him from the CBD to his place of residence.
“Upon arrival, the victim entered his yard, but there were some people who were surveilling his movements . . .
“When the suspects noticed that there were people watching, they then fired, resulting in the foreigner’s death,” said the source.
The police are yet to ascertain the value of the stolen property.
