Armed robbers unleash reign of terror

National police spokesperson chief superintendent Paul Nyathi said the man who has been identified as Barnabas Gijima was found dead and naked in a maize field between Zimre Park and Mabvuku last Saturday by two women who were fetching pumpkin leaves.

“The women alerted other people and the police. Gijima’s relatives positvely identified him and we believe that he lost a Samsung cellphone, clothes and shoes to the unknown assailants,” he said.

Chief Supt Nyathi also said a soldier lost cellphones and valuables worth US$1 200 to four armed robbers who had offered him a lift from the city centre to Mount Pleasant.
He said the soldier boarded a Toyota Spacio which had two robbers including the driver at Copacabbana rank at around 10pm.

The robbers then picked up their two other colleagues near NSSA building and drove along Second Street Extension.
It is alleged that along the way, the gang diverted the route and drove along Lomagundi Road.

One of the robbers produced a knife and ordered the soldier to surrender all his valuables.
He was dumped near the intersection of Lomagundi and King George  roads.

Chief Supt Nyathi said a 55-year-old man lost his Mercedes Benz to three robbers who confronted him after he had parked his vehicle near a clinic in the Avenues area last Saturday night.

“The three alleged that his car had a tyre puncture before hitting him with an unknown object and he became unconscious.
“They shoved him into his car before driving off,” he said.

He said the man regained consciousness the following morning and found himself tied to a tree in Domboshava. He was rescued by passers by.
Another 45 year-old man lost cellphones, camera and US$10 000 cash to three armed robbers who raided his Marlborough home on Saturday night.

The incident occurred at around 8pm while the man was watching television with his child when the robbers confronted them.
They were force marched into the bedroom where the robbers ransacked.

An Avondale family also lost a drilling machine, borehole pump, grinding machine, laptop, three cellphones, US$1 000, 1 000 Euro, jewellery and handbags to four armed robbers who attacked the family last Wednesday night.

Chief Supt Nyathi urged people to secure their homes and avoid keeping large amounts of money at home.
He said they were still investigating the cases.
