Artisanal miner killed after stealing money from colleague

POLICE have confirmed the arrest of eight suspects in connection with the murder of an artisanal miner who is alleged to have stolen money from a colleague.

Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the murder case which happened on Monday, around 3am in Shurugwi.

The suspects are Tafadzwa Mashove (34) of Athlone, Gweru, Simbarashe Maroora (42) of Maroora Village under Chief Ndanga, Shurugwi and Clain Mafa (23) of Neshuro Village in Mwenezi.

The other suspects are Noah Musemwa (36) of Village 1, Ruchanyu, Shurugwi, Linos Muzanarwo (42) of Manjuzu Village, Chief Munyaradzi, Gutu, Passmore Hobo (42) of Gandiwa Village, Chief Nemangwe, Gokwe, Melusi Mataruse (23) of Village Marongwe, Chief Nhema, Shurugwi, and Talent Manjuzu (29) of Majuzu Village, Chief Munyaradzi, Gutu.

“On November 1 this year, Francis Mazarire took advantage of Tafadzwa Mashove’s absence and got into his cabin and stole US$2 800,” he said.

“He then went on a spending spree with his girlfriend, whom he gave US$800. Thereafter, Mazarire relocated to Lalapanzi.

“The following day, Mashove is said to have teamed up with 12 others, looked for Francis Mazarire and found him in Lalapanzi.

“Mazarire is alleged to have admitted to having stolen the money and spending it recklessly with his girlfriend.”

Inspector Mahoko said the suspects took Mazarire back to Shurugwi, where they took turns to assault him using logs and as well as pouring hot water on his body.

“On November 3 at 3 am, they took him to Shurugwi District Hospital, but unfortunately, he died along the way. Eight suspects have been arrested, while the remaining five are being sought,” he said.

“We once again reiterate the call for aggrieved parties to seek legal remedies when handling their cases.”
