Local visual artist, Regis Chinomona is set to exhibit in Canada in April. Chinomona specialises in traditional jewellery which he said to be a hit amongst foreigners especially from Canada which is the pulling factor behind his choice of destination.
“Most of my products are taken up by Canadians and they seem to have fallen in love especially with the traditional jewellery and Afrocentric bead-work I design and that is exactly the major reason why I’m set to exhibit in that country.
The artist who has worked with such great artists as Tapfumanei Gutsa amongst others said one of his regular clients was helping facilitate his month long trip.
“I have been exporting most of my products mainly because the local market is not that receptive to what we make and I have made lots of friends in the Americas as a result one of my clients is now helping me with the upcoming exhibition that will showcase my products,” said Chinomona.
The month long trip will see Chinomona exhibiting his products with other renowned artists in the “One of A Kind” exhibition before he showcases his wares individually on different platforms around Canada.
Chinomona expressed his excitement in visiting Canada and being able to represent the arts sector in foreign lands and believes it should help the sector if the products are appreciated.
“I think this is a huge blessing for the sector mainly because our Zimbabwean products will be viewed by the world and this should in a way further broaden our market and increase the sales,” he said.
Chinomona began his trade at a very tender age and even left formal employment to follow his passion and does not regret the move.
“I am glad I pursued something I enjoy because it’s very frustrating to spend years doing something when your heart is somewhere else, so if you love something it’s best you follow it,” he said.
He urged other artists to remain determined saying the sector needs patience especially with the less rewarding local market.
“Our sector at time slacks monetary rewards in the beginning but artists should learn to soldier on during those times because when one finds their footing, everything changes for the better,” he said.
