Artistes form welfare committee

The committee will take care of any outstanding medical bills of the now deceased artistes as well as outstanding funeral expenses.

The committee was formed during a meeting held on Tuesday at Salukazi Arts Centre in Njube. The meeting was convened to discuss ways of addressing the plight of families of deceased artistes.

This comes after the deaths of imbube artiste Sam “Dokotela” Banda in December and music teacher Sizanani Moyo, early this month.

The meeting was attended by prominent figures from the city’s arts sector including members of the much travelled imbube group, Black Umfolosi, Umkhathi Arts, Bambanani Arts and marabi maestro Jeys Marabini, among others.

Marabini, who was appointed chairperson of the committee, said they had resolved to form the committee as a way of uniting Bulawayo artistes.

He said when an artiste from  the city dies, the committee would meet to decide what contribution to make towards the funeral expenses.

“We have already raised funds for Sizanani’s family although at the moment I am not at liberty to disclose how much we managed to come up with.

“From now on artistes will be asked to make contributions to our welfare fund,” said Marabini.
