Celebrated dub poet, musician and author, Albert Nyathi has urged artistes from all genres to be versatile and learn beyond their field of expertise. Nyathi revealed this in an interview with the Herald Entertainment during the official opening of Nancy Mteki’s ongoing exhibition “Mbereko” at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
“Artistes should learn to go an extra mile and explore other avenues in a bid to outgrow their talent. If one is a musician, he or she needs to visit places like galleries, I am sure they can learn one or two things to enhance their talents and compositions,” he said.
Nyathi added that being artistic calls for someone with a sense of creativity, therefore just a closer look at a drawing or piece of art can unite them.
“In the artistic world, no man is an Island for our talents heavily rely on other people’s works. It is a way of interacting and sharing of ideas, say if musicians meet with sculptors, visual artistes and photographers among other genres, they can learn one or two new things,” Nyathi pointed out.
The “Senzeni Na?” hitmaker was quick to point out that his success is a living testimony to his multitude of works he did while collaborating with other artistes across genres.
“Collaborations of artistes from across genres enrich one’s talent like in my case where I have been doing it with a number of artistes, in music, poetry and other genres. This will also enable them to see the world in a different angle,” he added.
Nyathi said in his own capacity, he used to see other forms of art as something irrelevant to his line of operation, but frequenting the national gallery has opened up other avenues for him to explore.
