SUNGURA artist, Bothwell Butau, has revealed that he was a drug addict for 15 years.

This follows the release of his single ‘Ndakadzidza”.

Bothwell (43), who stays in Dzivaresekwa, said he started using drugs in 2002, when he recorded his second album.

He abused drugs such as marijuana(mbanje) and Bronclear (Bronco).

In 2004 he stopped recording music due to addiction.

He started stealing money from his wife, which she was earning from selling vegetables, to buy drugs and this led to him to be divorced in 2008.

“Life became unbearable when my wife divorced me and left our child.

“I started working as a kombi conductor as I was no longer recording, I was now deep into drugs that I could not eat for days or interact well with others.

“I became violent and the drugs affected my heart and chest that even up to now I feel pains in my chest and kidneys,” said Bothwell.

In 2012, he started praying.

“I hadn’t prayed in a long time and when I did so, I felt some relief.

“I prayed mostly to have the strength to stop using drugs.

“I had to move to Westgate, where my uncle stays, so as to not have access drugs.

“I started going to church every Sunday and I managed to stop drugs completely.

“It was in 2020 when I was called by a producer in Chegutu and I recorded another album.

“I really wasted my time and opportunities during those 15 years. I have been sober for seven years and it has not been an easy journey but I fought my addiction.”
