Those contesting for the post of treasurer have to produce post O- Level qualifications that should be submitted to the club’s electoral college.
According to the returning officer and spokesman for the electoral court, Luke Mnkandla, the Highlanders constitution clearly states that for the post of treasurer, a candidate should have over and above the Ordinary Level qualifications, an accounting qualification.
“We gave them an extra 30 minutes to produce those documents and Nondo was said to be out of town but his wife promised to bring the documents to us and they were just in time otherwise we would have been left with no option but to disqualify him,” said Mnkandla when he emerged from the two-hour meticulous verification process at the Highlanders offices along Robert Mugabe Way.
Nondo will contest for the Highlanders treasurer’s post with interim treasurer and former Highlanders player Jerry Sibanda during the 3 February elections that will be held at the clubhouse.
Sibanda’s papers sailed through without hassles with his long time friend, Jotham Ndiweni representing him as his agent.
There is a record seven candidates vying for the post of vice-chairman, held by Sikhanyiso Moyo and all their nomination papers sailed through, setting the stage for an exciting two weeks of campaigning.
“All the candidates went through and are eligible for election during the day. This time the process was much less cumbersome as candidates were a bit cleverer because instead of having the usual 10 members, candidates had up to 15 which made our work much easier,” said Mnkandla.
Other members of the committee were human resources practitioners, Dave Sibanda and Cosmas Sikhosana, all members of the Highlanders board.
Those vying for the post of Highlanders vice-chairman, are incumbent Moyo, club marshal Frank Moyo, Leeroy Maplanka, Nkosinathi Ncube, former committee member Wisdom Mabhena, Harare Supporters’ Association chairman Mgcini Mpofu and city businessman Joel Mahlangu.
All the candidates, save for Mpofu expressed confidence that they will romp to victory come election day. Mpofu who is based in Harare was not represented but his papers went through as well.
The verification process had to be postponed to yesterday afternoon from morning due to power cuts in the city centre.
Even in the afternoon they had to resort to the use of a generator as electricity had not been restored.
There are allegations that some sitting executive members have been heard in certain circles going around de-campaigning other candidates, Mnkandla did not mince his words on that, calling it highly unethical and unacceptable behaviour.
“That will be so unfortunate indeed. It’s like you will be choosing who you want to work with, no that is unacceptable at all. Let the people choose who they want to lead them,” said Mnkandla.
Mnkandla said on the day of the election, every bona fide Highlanders member should bring their national identity cards, passport or driver’s licence for authenticity as there will be a very strict membership verification at the entrance.
