ASPIRING ward 13 Zanu PF councillor, Cde Ganizani Phiri, yesterday displayed his love for his community after donating two tonnes of mealie-meal to the vulnerable.

190 community members consisting of the elderly, orphans, and people with disabilities each received a bag of mealie-meal.

Residents who benefitted were from Tshabalala, Lobengula extension, Iminyela and Nkulumane.

The donation was met with jubilation by residents who expressed joy in getting the food parcel.

Some marvelled at the remarkable work that Cde Phiri has been doing for the community.

One of the beneficiaries Mrs Sikhulekani Moyo (70) said being a retired woman who is expected to look after her family is difficult because her pension money is not enough to cover a lot of things.

She said it warms her heart to know that there are some young people who still care enough to make donations.

“To some, this is nothing but just a 10kg bag of mealie meal but to an elderly person like me it’s a lot because it will warm our stomachs for the next few days,” said Mrs Moyo.

Another resident Mr Aron Dube said this is one of the good works that are being done by Cde Phiri and he has shown how much he cares for his community.

He pleaded with him to continue doing the remarkable work that he has been doing even after the election period.

Speaking on the sidelines of the donation, Cde Phiri said this was a gesture of recognising how important the elderly are and how everyone should always look out for the vulnerable.

He said this is also a way of exemplifying how powerful a community is if it comes together and works as one.

“These two tonnes were a way of showing everyone how committed l am to serving the community. This is one of the many projects that l have been spearheading in the community for the past few months. My goal is to ensure that the whole community is empowered,” said Cde Phiri.

The aspiring councillor has been helping youths acquire skills in health-related courses with the aim of helping them shape their futures.

He has also been working with schools in his ward by ensuring that their infrastructure is well developed and safe for school children.
