NATIONAL Assembly independent candidate for Mazowe North, Mr Shingirayi Run’anga, has hailed the prevailing peace characterising the 2018 harmonised election campaigns, saying it is the first of its kind in the province.
The former Zimbabwe Partnership for Prosperity (ZIPP) national youth chairman said this year’s political environment was different from previous elections as everyone was campaigning freely.
“Our campaigning team is working tirelessly to reach all the districts in the constituency,” he said. “Our daily calendar is packed with programmes and we are being well received everywhere we are going. Even after zanu-pf addresses a rally we are still managing to address the same gathering.
“According to the electoral law it is not an ethical transgression to address zanu-pf supporters. Recently, when we attended a meeting organised by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, we pushed for the Zimbabwe Republic Police to make a public announcement against the tearing of posters and to make sure that offenders are brought to book.”
Mr Run’anga took a swipe on other mainstream opposition parties taking advantage of the existing democracy by staging demonstrations that are aimed at triggering anarchy ahead of the harmonised elections.
“Elections are a game of numbers. Instead of focusing on trivial issues that are inimical to the peaceful political environment, parties should be concentrating more on campaigns, selling themselves to the electorate,” he said.
“Personally, I am not worried about other contestants as I am simply focusing on the electorate which is giving me confidence that I will win.”
