A BIG appetite for sadza landed a Harare man in soup after he was arrested for assaulting his wife for preparing potatoes and not his favourite staple food.
Hickman Gurupira (26) of Waterfalls, Harare, pleaded guilty to physical abuse when he appeared before Mbare magistrate Mrs Isabel Nyoni last week.
He was fined $50 and will spend 30 days in prison if he fails to pay the fine. Prosecutor Mr Mudenha Rugare told the court that on December 18, 2017, Gurupira got home late after a drinking binge.
His wife Faith Gumbutsa served him potatoes and this did not go down well with him. Mr Mudenha said: “. . . The accused person asked the complainant why she had cooked potatoes instead of sadza. The accused person then started assaulting the complainant with open hands several times on her back.”
Gumbutsa spent the night in a toilet after wriggling out of his grip and approached police in the morning. In her affidavit, she said: “This is not the first time my husband has abused me physically, so I have decided to file a report.”
