Two Harare men have since been arrested in connection with the death.
Norman Nyamutenha (24) and Aaron Nherera (34) appeared in court on murder charges.
Police have not yet identified the man who was fatally assaulted.
Nyamutenha and Nherera appeared before magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei.
The two were granted US$50 bail each and are expected back in court on November 17 for trial.
As part of their bail conditions, the two were ordered to continue residing at their given addresses and not to interfere with State witnesses.
Prosecutor Ms Morleen Mutamangira said charges against the duo arose on October 28 at Jacha area in Epworth area where the suspected thief attacked Nyamutenha with the intention of robbing him.
Nyamutenha shouted for help and Nherera, who heard the cries, went to his rescue.
Nherera chased after the suspected thief and other residents joined in the chase and apprehended him.
The residents assaulted the suspect with hands, feet and various objects.
Nyamutenha then took the injured man to the police station in the company of the mob while Nherera stayed behind.
The suspected thief was allegedly dumped at the police station gate while Nyamutenha went inside to report the matter.
Police officers carried the suspect into the station but he died while they were recording a statement from him.
Nyamutenha and Nherera were subsequently arrested.
