The gang also stole an empty cash box.
According to the police, the gang used bolt cutters, which they later forgot at the scene. Three of the suspects were arrested in Dulibadzimu suburb near Shule Shule area early on Monday morning while loading their loot into a pirate taxi.
Soon after their arrest, the trio implicated the fourth suspect who then led the police to their ringleader in Bulawayo to recover part of the loot.
The police officer commanding Beitbridge district, Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo yesterday said investigations were still underway.
He, however, could not disclose the suspects’ names, saying police believed they were part of a syndicate involved in a spate of house breaking cases around the border town targeting electrical
gadgets and mostly computers.
Chief Supt Chinhengo said police had since recovered one computer that was stolen at Vhembe High School.
“Our detectives pounced on the suspects early on Monday morning in Dulibadzimu suburb following a tip off,” said Chief Supt Chinhengo.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the group is linked to a number of thefts involving computers and other electrical gadgets around the town.
“We want to warn other members of the group that their days are numbered.”
There has been an increase in cases of armed robbery and burglaries in the border town for the past two months. In the same week four armed men broke into a Roman Catholic Church and took away
two laptops and US$2 000 from the priest in charge, Father Jules Greber.
The suspects are still at large.
Early last month four armed men raided the Beitbridge Rural District Council and stole US$200 000.
Four employees, including the security guard have since been arrested in connection with the theft.
