INSULTING and assaulting a police officer on duty earned a Honde Valley man a $100 fine, failure to pay will result in him spending 40 days in prison. William Kapungu (46) of Revi Village, Headman Samanga appeared before Mutare magistrate, Mr Langton Mukwengi last Friday and was convicted on his plea of guilty.
He was facing charges of Undermining Police Authority as Defined in Section 177 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
Public prosecutor, Mr Matthew Chimutunga told the court that: “On July 12 at around 1.30pm, Kapungu was driving a Toyota Hiace vehicle, Registration Number ADC 7161, belonging to Kisimusi Tours. He approached a police roadblock at Bvuma Turnoff in Honde Valley where Constable Andrew Chingamombe and his crew instructed him to stop.
“The commuter omnibus lacked enough papers and fitness so Kapungu was ordered to pay $15 fine. Kapungu started insulting Cst Chingamombe using vulgar language, threatening to bewitch him.
“Cst Chingamombe walked towards Kapungu in a bid to arrest him, but the notorious kombi driver pushed him and he fell on the ground. Kapungu took his car keys and vanished, leaving the car on the middle of the road.
“The commuter omnibus was impounded,” he said.
Kapungu and the commuter omnibus owner later went to Ruda Police Station with the car keys to collect the kombi and he was arrested.
Mr Mukwengi ordered Kapungu to pay a fine of $100 or face a 40-day imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine before August 30.
