Zimbabwe president Tendai Tagara said they are using the event to finalise preparations for the Southern Africa Region Senior and Youth championships to be held in Botswana early next month.
The Youth championships were originally scheduled for May 23 and 24 in Pretoria, South Africa but they have been moved to Botswana and will now be held concurrently with the seniors’ event on June 1 and 2.
“All the provinces will be there. I think it should be a good turn out because we are expecting both teams from the seniors and youth to be there. The event for the youth has been moved from South Africa to Botswana.
“It was supposed to be held on May 23 and 24 but it’s now combined with the seniors’ event and will be held on June 1 and 2.
“We are looking at more than 300 athletes tomorrow (today). We have a provisional team for regional event and tomorrow will make the final selection. We are likely to send around 20 youth and 12 seniors,” said Tagara.
Tagara said the event will assist them with their preparations as they are not going to have a camp ahead of the regional events and are looking forward to a competitive event.
“This will help our athletes because we have the Universities team for the World Student Games coming to participate. They are sending 23 athletes, we are giving them a special slot. We also have the team for the SARPCCO Games, they are coming.
“We are just going to assemble the team two days before we leave in Bulawayo,” said Tagara.
