Attack on Opposition Supporter’s Homestead in Tsholotsho raises concern

Sunday News Reporter

A tragic incident unfolded in Godzo village in Tsholotsho district when the homestead of Mthokozisi Moyo and his wife, Caution Immaculate Ndlovu, was set ablaze.

The couple, who were sleeping with their young son at the time, narrowly escaped the inferno, while their son sustained burns on his arm.

Witnesses indicate that the attack was politically motivated, stemming from Mthokozisi’s role as a Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)cell group coordinator.

A fellow villager, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that Mthokozisi had become a target due to his active campaigning for the opposition party, particularly since he was arrested and detained without charge in 2019 for his political activities.

“This latest attack is just another chapter in the ongoing harassment that Mthokozisi has faced,” the villager stated.

“Since he started campaigning for CCC, he has had to live in fear, and now this. It’s terrifying to think about the safety of his family.”

The brutal assault on the Moyo-Ndlovu family comes in the lead-up to the by-elections scheduled for November 11, 2023.

Tensions have escalated in Tsholotsho, with supporters of the ruling Zanu-PF party reportedly declaring the area a “no-go zone” for opposition members.

According to the villager, Mthokozisi’s prominence within the opposition has made their homestead a target.

“We are worried about the safety of the family,” the villager expressed.

“Even after the attack, the police refused to investigate the incident, leaving us feeling vulnerable and helpless.”

As the community grapples with the implications of this act of violence, the Moyo-Ndlovu family faces an uncertain future, battling not only for their safety but also for the right to express their political beliefs without fear.

The incident has raised serious concerns about political intolerance and the safety of opposition supporters in the region.
